Uber pulls out of Nigeria and Uganda as operating costs and competition rise

Uber has ended its ride-hailing services in Nigeria and Uganda with immediate effect. The decision shuts down operations across two of sub-Saharan Africa's primary urban economies without a grace period or transition window for riders and drivers.

Passengers opening the smartphone application in Lagos, Abuja, and Kampala now face empty location maps or pop-up notices stating service in the region has ended. Drivers who depended on the platform for daily income found themselves logged out of the network as the shutdown took force.

Uber entered Nigeria in July 2014, establishing its initial West African headquarters in Lagos. The company expanded to Abuja in 2016 and later reached smaller urban centers, aiming to capture market share in Africa's most populous nation.
