Five Ebola survivors discharged in DRC as total cases surpass 6,000

Health workers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo celebrated as five Ebola survivors left isolation after testing negative for the virus. The discharges occurred as total documented cases in the outbreak passed 6,000.

Officials and health personnel leading the response gathered at the treatment facility to mark the exit of the five individuals. The head of the response coalition said it was a "momentous day" for the medical teams working on the front lines. He added that the recoveries were a "source of pride" for his team.

The response coalition has operated across affected health zones to isolate active cases and track contacts. Staff members monitored the five patients through full treatment cycles before approving their release.

Discharge protocols require patients to show complete recovery from symptoms and return consecutive negative blood test results.
