AGRA report shows progress in African agriculture alongside ongoing food security gaps

Farm output across Africa doubled in real terms after 2005, while agriculture gross value-added growth rose from about 2.3 percent to almost 4 percent. Cereal yields increased by about 40 percent, and farmer incomes doubled over the same two decades.

Yet hunger has risen across the continent over the same timeframe. Productivity gaps remain wide, and many small-scale farmers still struggle to turn larger harvests into reliable, long-term income.

These findings appear in a report published by AGRA, titled Africa’s agrifood system transformation and the path ahead. The report covers 20 years of evidence gathered across African agrifood systems.
