Sixty-eight rescued after two Granbird buses collide on Kumasi-Accra highway

Firefighters in Ghana used a hydraulic spreader and a dashboard roll rescue technique to extract driver Simon Azuma from his crushed VIP Granbird coach after a late-night collision on the Kumasi-Accra highway.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:31 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2026, near Duapompo along the highway connecting the Ashanti Region to Accra.

Azuma was trapped behind the wheel of his bus while 67 other people required medical treatment following the impact.

A total of 68 people were on board the two commercial buses involved in the collision. Each bus was carrying 34 passengers when the crash occurred along the highway stretch.

The Ghana National Fire Service confirmed details of the incident in an official statement
