Ghanaian youth demand 40% of climate adaptation budget for four northern regions
Young climate advocates in Ghana are demanding that the government direct at least 40 percent of its annual climate adaptation budget to four northern regions facing severe climate hazards.
The targeted areas consist of the Upper East, Upper West, Northern, and Savannah regions.
The requirement forms the central push of a new National Youth Statement adopted at the 2026 Local Conference of Youth, known as LCOY Ghana.
The conference took place virtually from August 22 to 23, 2026.
Organizers held the gathering under the theme Youth-Led Equity: Driving Fair Climate Solutions in Ghana.
About 300 young delegates joined the sessions from across all 16 regions of the country.
