Niger arrests dozens of soldiers following attempted mutiny

Dozens of soldiers were killed or arrested in Niamey after a group of young troops attempted a mutiny against Niger's ruling junta.

A state television broadcast confirmed the violence in the capital city. Analysts classified the incident as a direct threat to the military leaders currently governing the nation.

Unrest in the Capital

Young troops launched the mutiny in Niamey before senior officers stepped in to suppress the movement. State television reported that dozens of soldiers died or ended up in custody during the operation.

The broadcast did not release an exact casualty count. Analysts said the rebellion exposed serious fractures within the rank and file of the military forces based in the capital.

The government has not revealed the specific identities or ranks of the troops involved in the mutiny. Unconfirmed reports indicate that senior military officials spent hours securing government buildings across Niamey.

The Power Structure in Niamey

Niger has operated under military control since July 2023. General Abdourahamane Tiani took control of the country after leading a coup that removed elected President Mohamed Bazoum.

Tiani was the head of the presidential guard before he announced the overthrow on national television. Bazoum was detained inside the presidential compound during the military takeover.

The military administration established the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland to manage state affairs. The council suspended the national constitution and dissolved all existing government institutions shortly after taking power.

Political parties remain banned under Tiani's decree. Public demonstrations require strict authorization from the military administration.

Regional Military Shifts

The mutiny occurs amid massive geopolitical shifts in West Africa. Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso created the Alliance of Sahel States in late 2023.

All three neighbouring countries are governed by military officers who seized power in recent revolts. The military administrations formed the bloc to establish a shared defence pact against internal and external threats.

Tiani ended long-standing defence agreements with Western nations after taking power. Niger ordered the complete withdrawal of roughly 1,500 French troops from its territory in late 2023.

The junta cancelled a military cooperation agreement with the United States in March 2024. American forces began withdrawing personnel and equipment from Air Base 201 near the northern city of Agadez.

Russian military personnel arrived in Niamey in April 2024. The military government acquired air defence systems and equipment directly from Moscow.
