Shelton ends Alcaraz’s title reign in late-night marathon, will face Tiafoe in US Open semis

At 3:33 a.m. on Wednesday, Ben Shelton put an end to the latest-finishing match in the history of the US Open.

The American defeated Carlos Alcaraz 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) in a quarterfinal match that lasted 4 hours and 28 minutes.

The result ended Alcaraz’s 18-match winning streak in Grand Slam tournaments.

Shelton seized control of the contest midway through the night by winning nine consecutive games. That stretch started early in the second set and continued until Shelton built a 3-0 lead in the third set.
