Former Auditor General Daniel Domelevo advises Chief Justice to avoid political comments

Former Auditor General Daniel Yaw Domelevo advised Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to refrain from commenting on political issues that could eventually come before the courts.

Speaking during an appearance on Channel One TV on Saturday, September 5, Domelevo warned that political statements from the head of the judiciary create a public perception of bias.

The advice followed remarks made by Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie during recent visits to several state-owned institutions.

In those visits, the Chief Justice praised the performance of state institutions under the current administration.

He also raised questions about what those same state entities had achieved during the previous eight years.

Domelevo stated that public officials holding sensitive constitutional positions must exercise caution in their public pronouncements.

He said this caution is especially necessary when commenting on the performance or conduct of institutions that may later become active parties in legal cases.

“My wish is that if it is possible, the Chief Justice should stop commenting on some political issues, especially issues that can later on cover litigation coming back to the court,” Domelevo said on Channel One TV.

Domelevo noted that the Chief Justice may intend to strengthen cooperation between the Judiciary and other state institutions through these visits.
