Sitting Pretty: GETFund’s Nationwide Furniture Drive to Revive Ghana’s Schools
The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has launched a nationwide initiative to mobilise classroom furniture for basic, junior and senior high schools facing critical shortages across the country. The Collective Furniture Appeal is being implemented through GETFund's Education Financing and Partnership Initiative (EFPI) to bring together various stakeholders to support schools in need.
Reviving Ghana's Schools, One Desk at a Time
The initiative responds to numerous requests from schools across the country for essential furniture to improve teaching and learning conditions. Despite sustained government investment in educational infrastructure, furniture shortages remain a challenge in several communities, with some pupils still sharing desks or learning under uncomfortable conditions. The items being sought include metal mono and dual desks and chairs for students, bunk beds, teachers' tables and chairs, as well as other essential furniture required to create safe and conducive learning environments.
A Collective National Effort
Under the initiative, corporate Ghana, non-governmental organisations, development partners, traditional authorities, religious organisations, community groups, alumni associations, and the general public are being encouraged to donate new or gently used furniture. GETFund noted that addressing the deficit would require a collective national effort to complement ongoing government interventions. This aligns with President John Mahama's vision of transforming Ghana's education sector through strategic partnerships, innovative financing, and shared responsibility.
Expanding Private-Sector Participation
The Collective Furniture Appeal forms part of the broader EFPI programme, through which GETFund is seeking to expand private-sector and philanthropic participation in financing educational development. This initiative would complement government investments in school infrastructure, teaching and learning resources, and other interventions aimed at improving educational outcomes.
