Local Government Ministry promises support to district assemblies for national programs

A hundred thousand residents in Accra's Jamestown neighborhood could be moved into stacked, refurbished shipping containers built above a cleared 50-year-old garbage dump.
The proposal was announced by Mahama Ayariga, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, during a visit to the National Chief Imam, His Eminence Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, on Friday.
The Friday meeting was Ayariga's first official destination after being sworn into office.
Ayariga said the ministry plans to clear the massive refuse heap that has built up in Jamestown over five decades and replace the sprawling horizontal settlement with vertical container housing.
Under the plan, 1,000 refurbished shipping containers will be placed on top of one another to form high-rise residential
