Galamsey activities around the Bui Dam Reservoir in the Banda District have been causing a significant reduction in fish catches among local fishermen. "The chemicals being used by the illegal miners have exterminated and also driven the fishes away and seriously affected our waters," Mrs. Ndah stated during a research project and stakeholders' engagement organized by the School of Natural Resources of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) at Fiapre, near Sunyani.

Mrs. Ndah emphasized that effective law enforcement is the most reliable way to curb illegal mining and safeguard water bodies. "The Commission's law enforcement unit is collaborating with stakeholders to control illegal mining activities and preserve the region's water resources," she explained.

The UENR's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Elvis Asare-Bediako, reaffirmed the University's commitment to creating an enabling environment for research, innovation, and community engagement. In a speech read on his behalf, Professor Asare-Bediako said the University would continue to invest in strengthening research capacity, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and building strategic partnerships to advance knowledge and sustainable development.
