‘BECE is now more or less a placement examination’ – Daniel Fenyi

The Basic Education Certificate Examination no longer determines whether a student in Ghana is permitted to progress to senior high school. Daniel Fenyi, Head of the Public Relations Unit of the Ghana Education Service, stated that the national assessment must now be viewed almost entirely as a placement tool rather than an academic filter.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsnight on Monday, September 9, Fenyi explained that continuing education past the basic level is an absolute right belonging to every child. The traditional concept of the examination acting as a barrier to secondary education has been discarded by education authorities.

"The BECE itself is now more or less a placement examination," Fenyi told the station during the broadcast. "It doesn’t determine who can move forward and who cannot, because moving forward is a right of the child."
